Amazing article, but it raises the question: why did empires come back in the 8th century with the Assyrians (and then Babylonians, Lydians, Medes and Persians)? People were still using iron weapons, so what changed?

An interesting take, but I lean towards the other interpretation. Spread of iron was a consequence of the collapse, as disruption of international trade made bronze-making impossible or very expensive. Early iron was of poor quality, and unlikely was the "super-weapon" as steel become much later.

Bronze Age collapse was more of a "system collapse" of the whole world system then that became top-heavy and fragile and could not maintain its complexity any more. It had to be rebuild several centuries later on a significantly different foundation, but bronze in fact continued to be used more than iron even in the "Iron Age".
